What is a power of attorney?

It is a legal document that gives authority to an individual to act in place of another, defining its scope, either explicitly or implicitly. The authority through Power of Attorney may be as limited or as broad as a single action until multiple actions or an entire range of tasks may be carried out.

Depending on their scope and purpose, different types of POAs exist, including:

General Power of Attorney (GPOA): Covers a wide variety of matters and offers broad authority which may be overwhelming.

Special or Limited Power of Attorney: Authority for specific transactions is limited (e.g. property selling).

Durable Power of Attorney: Valid until the principal is incapacitated.

Medical Power of Attorney: Authority over health care decision making.

  • Representing an investor in real estate or company transactions.
